Looking for an awesome
experience...
Tandem paragliding is a great way to experience flight
for the first time or if you have been flying for years. For people
who have never flown before, you can rest easy and let the pilot take
you through the flight. If you are an experienced pilot, tandem flying
can offer insight into thermalling techniques, route planning, maneuvers
training and even cross country flying.
Being a passenger during a tandem flight is like getting
the best seat in the house. The views are exceptional. All that is required
is a bit of paper work and 5-10 steps of running. The rest you leave
to the pilot, so you can sit back, relax, feel the wind in your face
and take in the views.
As far as how a tandem works - the canopy is much larger
than a normal glider and holds the weight of 2 people quite easily.
Both the pilot and passenger will have their own harness and helmet.
The harnesses are connected together with a "spreader bar"
and the lines for the wing attach to the bar. The pilot will sit behind
the passenger. On launch we will wait for the right weather conditions.
When the wind is blowing up the hill lightly we will
count to 3 and start running. The glider will smoothly pick us up and
we will be flying. A small adjustment will allow us to sit comfortably
back in the harness. We will fly over the mountains looking for lifting
air and if we find some we will circle in it like a bird. We call these
columns of rising air - thermals. Thermals can extend our flying time
and generally flights last 20 to 40 minutes.
As we approch the landing area, we can prepare by leaning
forward in a stand up position. The pilot will slow down the canopy
a few feet over the ground and we will generally just stand up or take
a few steps to complete the landing.
